9 Secrets Target Doesn’t Want You To Know

1. Go Green, Get Paid

Bring in your own reusable bags, and Target will give you a 5-cent discount at checkout for each reusable. It’s not much, but it can add up — especially on those big shopping days.

2. Shop Online Instead of In-Store

“My advice to save money at Target that most people don’t know — and that Target does not talk about — is that online prices are cheaper than in the store,” said Vanessa Valiente, a San Diego-based personal shopper and creator of the fashion blog V-Style. “To get the online price in-store and save time, order the items online and then click on the ‘pick up in store’ option. If you are already in a Target store and want to get the online price, you can look up the item online and then have the cashier price match the item.”

3. Compare Prices at Multiple Store Locations

An item might be on clearance at one store and not another. To find the best price at different Targets in your area, use BrickSeek.com’s Target inventory checker, said Collin Morgan, CEO at the frugal living site Hip2Save.com.

“One of the things I love about Target is that if you wait long enough to purchase an item you love, it will eventually go on clearance,” said Morgan. “Just grab the UPC number off the tag or the DPCI number found on online listings and use BrickSeek to check current pricing. If you are lucky enough to live near multiple Target stores, you can look and see where the best price is before heading out to shop. I will say that BrickSeek is not always 100% accurate, but it’s a great resource.”

4. Use Coupons From Other Sites

Target coupons aren’t limited to those you can find on the website, app and circulars. Check sites like RetailMeNot, Groupon and DealCatcher to find more Target coupons to stack.

5. Use a Coupon Aggregator When You Shop On Target.com

Install the Honey plugin on your browser and you’ll automatically have any applicable promo codes applied to your Target.com purchase.

6. You Don’t Need To Buy 2 Items To Benefit From ‘2-for’ Pricing

Target will often label discounted items as “2 for x-dollars,” but you don’t actually need to buy two items to get the lower price, according to the Krazy Koupon Lady. These signs might entice you to buy more than you normally would, so just stick to buying one of whatever item is marked down to truly save.

7. Buy Toys in January, July and December

Target has semi-annual toy sales during January and July, and also offers big discounts on toys during the holidays, according to the Krazy Koupon Lady. Stock up on toys for birthday and holiday gifts during these periods with major markdowns.

8. Get a Rain Check on a Sold-Out Sale Item

If an item you want is out of stock, you can ask customer service to issue you a rain check that will enable you to purchase the product at its sale price for that day, according to the Krazy Koupon Lady. This rain check is good for up to 45 days. Not every Target store offers this perk — but it can’t hurt to ask.

9. Use Manufacturer’s Coupons — Even If They Say They Are For Other Stores

Target accepts manufacturer’s coupons, even if they’re labeled as “redeemable at Walmart” or redeemable at another store, according to the Krazy Koupon Lady.

10 Money-Saving Secrets Target Doesn’t Want You To Know

1. Pick Your Day

Because most Targets mark down certain departments on specific days for clearance, knowing the schedule can help you find the best Target deals.

“For instance, you’ll find the best deals on clearance electronics on a Monday and sporting good clearance on Thursday,” said Christy Palmer, founder of the All Things Target blog.

Here’s a schedule Palmer said is good for most Targets:

Monday: Electronics, accessories, kids’ clothing, books, baby, stationery
Tuesday: Domestic goods, women’s clothing, pets, market (food items)
Wednesday: Men’s clothing, health & beauty, diapers, lawn & garden, furniture
Thursday: Houseware, lingerie, shoes, toys, sporting goods, decor & luggage
Friday: Auto, cosmetics, hardware, jewelry

2. Check For Price Adjustments

Here’s a moment everyone has felt and no one likes: You finally buy that dress you’ve been wanting only to see it go on sale the next day. Well, at Target, you can get the difference between what you paid and the new sale price refunded, said Palmer.

So, if an item you bought goes on sale within 14 days of purchase, just bring in your receipt and Target will adjust the price for you. Some exclusions do apply, so make sure you read Target’s policy before requesting a price adjustment.

3. Shop Amazon

Wait, you can shop on Amazon to save money at Target? Correct, because Target is one of many retailers with price match guarantee.

As expected, there are some rules and restrictions. But in general, Target will match the lower price from select online or local retailers.

4. Know the Clearance Codes

Clearance items are some of the best deals at Target, Palmer said, and they are marked down to certain levels in a certain order. “First, items will get marked down to 15% or 30% off, then to 50% off and finally end up at 70% off,” she said.

If you’re on the hunt for clearance items, they should be marked down in red or yellow stickers, according to Palmer. The new price and the percentage of the markdown will be in the top right-hand corner without a percent symbol.

“Check the number in the upper-right corner of the price tag,” said Palmer. “If it says ’70,’ it’s been marked down to 70% off.”

If a price ends in $0.04, this usually indicates it’s reached its lowest markdown.

5. Shop For the Holidays Early — or Late

Want Halloween or Christmas decorations, Easter baskets or back-to-school items that are practically free? Wait a few days or a few weeks after the holiday to buy them.

Holiday items will be cut by 50% the day after the holiday — 30% for candy. But wait a week or so, and products could go down to 70% off. Then, a few days later, if anything is left, they’ll go to 90% off, which is practically free.

Here’s a list of days and times of year that Target offers holiday sale prices, according to All Things Target:

  • Valentine’s Day
  • Easter
  • Summer
  • Back-to-School
  • Halloween
  • Christmas …

6. Stack ‘Em and Save

If you’ve done your pre-Target-run prep properly, you might have more than one coupon for a single item. No problem: Target lets you stack coupons.

Don’t be shy about handing the checkout person a Target coupon, a manufacturer’s coupon and even a third coupon, such as a Target Cartwheel discount for the same item.

7. Use a Cash-Back App or Website

To save even more money at Target, sign up for an Ibotta, Ebates or BeFrugal account. These online programs and smartphone apps give you money back for selected items you buy at Target or other participating stores.

Every service is slightly different, but the bottom line is you receive cash back for the items you buy.

8. Use Target’s Wedding Registry — Even If You’re Not Getting Married

Even if you’re not actually getting married or having a baby, creating a wedding or baby registry is a sneaky way you can save on big-ticket items.

“What I do to save money at Target is that I create a registry for items that I need,” said Becky Beach, founder of MomBeach.com. “After the date of the registry [event, Target gives you a coupon] for 15% off [the remaining items]. That’s how I was able to get a brand new TV set cheaper after our toddler broke the one we had.”

Stack the 15% off deal with the 5% you get for shopping with a REDcard and any Cartwheel discounts, and you can save big bucks.

9. Buy Discount Gift Cards

You can shave even more off your bill by buying discount gift cards at sites like Gift Card Granny or Raise. The cards are real gift cards that you use like cash, so the bonus is that the gift card savings are in addition to any savings with coupons or sales.

10. Don’t Rely On Advertisements

Periodically, Target might have unadvertised markdowns on items. These bargains will be labeled with red and white sale signs, and the signs will have dates on the bottom telling you how long the sales are valid, Palmer said.

“Some are valid longer than a week, some sale prices will last a month or more,” she said.

How to save money while shopping at Target

Target shoppers often end up buying more than they plan. The so-called “ Target Effect” sometimes has customers walking into the store for just a single item, then leaving with dozens more. Thankfully, Target makes saving money as easy as it makes spending it.

Through Target’s website, shoppers can find coupons and clearance deals that can be used online or in stores, including coupons found through the Target app or manufacturers. Knowing when to shop is equally as important as checking for coupons — Target marks down different departments on different days, and has its best sales after certain holidays.

Here are some other tips for saving money at Target:

Some Target shoppers have noted that the store marks down different departments on different days.

Popsugar reported that the markdowns can vary store to store, though a Target spokesperson said that the retailer does not follow a consistent schedule.

If an item you bought in the past 14 days goes on sale, Target will refund you the difference between the purchase price and the new sale price.

Target will price match if you bring proof of a lower price from a select online competitor.

If you see a competitor’s local print ad for a lower price, or see a select competitor has a lower price online, bring it to Target in the next 14 days and you’ll be sure to get the best price.

12 Secrets Target Shoppers Need to Know

If you’re like a lot of people, you love Target, but you don’t love what it does to your wallet. Who hasn’t run in to the big box store intending to pick up toilet paper and laundry detergent and walked out an hour later with a cart full of other items you just had to have?

It can be hard resist the siren call of the red bullseye, but shopping at Target doesn’t have to mean spending a lot. Though the chain has a reputation for high prices – it lost to Walmart when we did a head-to-head price comparison – savvy bargain-hunters know how to find deals at the store. By combining store sales, coupons, clearance discounts, and other savings tricks, it’s possible to indulge in your Target addiction without going broke.

A quick internet search reveals dozens of Target savings secrets from bloggers and shopping experts. From knowing the markdown schedule (we’ll get to that in a minute) to maximizing coupons to taking advantage of rain checks when a sale item is sold out, there are literally dozens of ways to save at the store. The problem is keeping track of them all.

To do that, your best bet is to head to Target-specific shopping blog like All Things Targetand Totally Target. There, you’ll find rundowns of the weekly ad, tips and tricks, and other advice for making the most of your Target shopping experience. To get you started on your Target savings adventure, we’ve compiled 12 of our favorite secrets to getting the best deal at Target. Happy shopping!

1. There’s a method to the clearance madness

Target deal-hunters need to know when things are typically marked down so they don’t miss out on a bargain. Here’s when different categories of items typically go on clearance at most Target stores, according to Mike Catania, founder of PromotionCode. (Your store might have a slightly different markdown schedule.)

  • Monday: Electronics, accessories, kids’ clothing, books, baby, and stationery
  • Tuesday: Domestics, women’s clothing, pets, and market/food items
  • Wednesday: Men’s clothing, health and beauty, diapers, lawn and garden items, and furniture
  • Thursday: Housewares, lingerie, shoes, toys, sporting goods, decor and luggage
  • Friday: Auto, cosmetics, hardware, and jewelry

Clearanced items can be found all over the store, but the endcaps – the displays at the end of the aisle – are a good place to start looking. Markdowns start at 15% and can go down to 90% off for seasonal items (discounts on regular items stop at 70% off). Check the upper-right corner of the price tag to see how much an item has been discounted. If you see the number “15” or “30” and are a gambler, you might want to wait for a further discount.

2. January and July is the best time to shop for toys

Target is always discounting old merchandise to make room for the new, but sometimes, the store really cleans house. In the toy section, the big clear-outs happen in January and July, according to All Things Target. Sometime in mid-January and again at the end of July, the store will discount last season’s toys to 70%. The markdown should happen on the day your store normally starts toy discounts. For most shoppers, that will be Thursday.

3. The Black Friday deals are among the best

Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, shoppers descend on stores hoping to snag great deals on holiday gifts. Some of the best Black Friday bargains around are at Target. The same goes for Cyber Monday.

“Every year, Target is one of our top five stores for Black Friday deals,” Benjamin Glaser, features editor with DealNews, said. “Interestingly, unlike Amazon and Walmart, Target also makes the list for the best deals of Cyber Monday. It should definitely be one of your first stops for apparel, electronics, and appliance deals during the whole two-week period surrounding Thanksgiving.”

4. You don’t need to apply for a credit card to get RedCard savings

You may already know that shoppers with a Target RedCard save 5% on all their Target purchases. But a 23.15% APR makes the RedCard risky for all but the most responsible shoppers.

“The APR on the Target Red Card makes it an incredibly poor choice unless you’re prepared to pay the balance off in full each month and don’t have reservations about how Target collects your shopping data based on its use,” Catania said. “That said, it’s particularly handy for big-ticket items around the holidays to get free shipping or for already-heavily-marked-down items as the 5% flat discount applies to just about everything.”

Fortunately, there’s a way to get that 5% discount without running the risk of getting into debt. Target also has a RedCard debit card that links directly to your bank account. You still have to be willing to let Target collect data on your shopping habits, but there’s no chance you’ll end up paying interest on those discounted housewares you couldn’t pass up.

5. You don’t need the app to save with Cartwheel

Sure, you’ve heard about Target’s Cartwheel app, which gives you access to special coupons and discounts. What you may not know is that it’s possible to get those savings even if you don’t have a smartphone. All you have to do is go online, create an account, and add offers. Then, print out your barcode and take it with you when you shop. At checkout, the clerk will scan your code, and you’ll get the discount. And because your barcode never changes, you only need to print it out once to save big.

6. You can stack deals to create big savings

One of the best ways to save when shopping at Target is to stack offers. “I maximize my savings using sales, a manufacturer coupon, Cartwheel, and a Target coupon,” Fatima Ward-Johnson, a mother of five who lives in Chicago and shops at Target several times a week, told The Cheat Sheet. If you have a RedCard you can also add that to your savings stack.

Of course, keeping track of coupons and finding the best deals can be a bit of headache. Sites like Totally Target and All Things Target will help you find the best coupon match-ups.

7. Free gifts make shopping even sweeter

A discount is great, but sometimes, Target will actually give you stuff for shopping there. The most common deals involve free gift cards with purchase. At the time of this writing, you could get a $10 gift card when you buy two boxes of diapers, or a $5 gift card when you buy $15 worth of personal or skin care items, and those were just two of dozens of similar offers.

In addition to gift cards, you can sometimes score other freebies. “Purchase when it’s possible to get a free gift with purchase. Last month, Target offered a free beauty sampler box with a $30 beauty purchase,” Alyce Green of Makeup Bonuses said. When you create a baby registry, you can stop by the guest services counter and pick up a bag of coupons and samples.

Gift card offers change frequently. The current promotions are listed on Target’s website.

8. You can almost always save $5 off a $50 purchase

Not all Target discounts are well-publicized, and a quick search of deal sites like PromotionCode or RetailMeNot can turn up additional savings. “Target runs an online offer of $5 off $50 purchases almost year-round with relatively few limitations that is not available in-store or publicized in their mailers,” Catania said.

9. If you use outside apps, you’ll save even more

Pairing exclusive Target deals with additional rewards from outside apps has the potential to magnify your savings. Shopkick will reward you with “Kicks” just for visiting Target (and other stores), scanning items (even if you don’t buy them), and uploading your receipts. You can redeem Kicks for gift cards, including Target gift cards. With Ibotta, you unlock rebate deals by performing simple tasks, shopping, and then uploading your receipt to earn cash back.

10. Target price matches most big chains

Unfortunately, Target doesn’t have an app like Walmart’s Savings Catcher, where you can upload your receipts and receive a gift card if the app finds the items you bought on sale somewhere else for a lower price. But Target does do price matching. If you find a cheaper price for an item at a competitor – including big competitors like Amazon, Costco, and Sam’s Club — just bring in the ad and show it to the clerk to get the same price at Target. If you’ve already bought the item, you can request a price adjustment at guest services within 14 days of purchase. In addition to local competitors, Target will match prices at more than a dozen big online stores.

11. You can get gift cards for your old electronics

Do you have an old phone, tablet, or other gadget that’s gathering dust? Take it to your local Target and trade it in for a gift card. You can get your device appraised online, ship it for free, and receive a gift card in return. Or, you may be able to drop it off at a local Target store. (Not all Targets participate in the trade-in program, so be sure to check online before you go.) You can get as much as $65 for a working LG G4 with a charger or $23 for a Garmin Approach S5 smartwatch with all its accessories.

12. Goodwill gets Target’s castoffs

To get great deals on Target products, you might want to head to a completely different store. If clearance items don’t sell at Target, they sometimes end up at Goodwill. You’ll need to check out the racks at your local thrift stores or talk to the staff to find out if they sell “new” items from Target.

Tricks to Save More Money at Target

Shopping at Target is fun. Saving money at Target? Now, that’s just a blast. Here are eleven strategies to save more at Target. Do you know all of them?

01 Use Target Coupons

Target

Be sure to check Target.com for coupons before you head to the store. You’ll find coupons for groceries, clothing, housewares, office supplies and more, and these store coupons can be used in conjunction with manufacturer coupons and Cartwheel offers (more on that later) to create a really sweet deal.

02 Sign Up for the Mobile Coupon Program

Turn your cell phone into a source of savings by signing up for Target’s mobile coupon program. A fresh batch of store coupons will be sent to your phone one a month, along with a barcode that can be scanned at the register.

03 Use Target Cartwheel

Cartwheel is Target’s new social coupon program. Log in; choose the coupons you want; then have the cashier scan your personal barcode at the register to deduct your savings. Get the app to store your barcode on your phone, or print out a paper copy, and carry it with you.

A couple nice things about the program:

  • Each deal can be used up to four times. So, if you buy four boxes of eligible cereal, your Cartwheel discount will be applied to each box
  • Cartwheel coupons can be stacked with Target coupons and manufacturer coupons

04 Shop the End Caps

End caps – it’s a fancy term for those shelves that appear at the end of each aisle, and a term that belongs in every frugalite’s vocabulary. Why? Because that’s where most of the clearance goodies end up. Get in the habit of walking the outer perimeter of the store, and you may just nab a bargain.

Tip: Target marks down its clearance in increments – 15, 25, 30, 50, 75 and 90% off (the first reduction amount varies by department). If you’re not thrilled with the current clearance price on an item, it may be worth holding out for another markdown. Just bare in mind, clearance items move quickly, and holiday merchandise is usually the only stuff that goes 90% off.

Target also has a clearance section online.

05 Check Your Receipt for Coupons

Be sure to check your receipt carefully before tossing it. Target has begun printing high-value coupons at the bottom of receipts – a nice bonus for attentive shoppers.

06 Combine Manufacturer Coupons with Sales

It’s no secret that combining coupons with sales can lead to big savings, but it’s also no secret that doing so takes effort. The solution? Let someone else do the work for you. Couponmom.com matches the weekly Target sales to manufacturer coupons, so you don’t have to.

07 Use Coupons on Trial-size Merchandise

Like freebies? Then, it’s time to become friends with the trial-size section at Target. Cut out all the newspaper coupons for new products (that don’t have size restrictions), and match them up to items in the trial section. You’ll be amazed at how many things you can get for free, a few cents or even at a profit.

08 Take Advantage of Holiday Clearance

Shopping the after-holiday sales at Target can lead to big savings, especially when you know when to shop. While the markdown schedule will vary some from store-to-store, here’s a general guide:

50% off – the day after the holiday
75% off – three days after
90% off – a week after

09 Buy Discounted Gift Cards

Snag an extra 3% off every purchase by purchasing discounted Target gift cards through Gift Card Granny,

10 Catch a Daily Deal

Target.com lists up to five deeply discounted items on it’s Daily Deals page each day. These items are available for one day only and ship free. If they offer something that you need, it can be a fantastic deal.

11 Shop at Goodwill

What does shopping at Goodwill have to do with saving money at Target? Not much, but it does have a lot to do with saving money on Target merchandise. Since the retail giant frequently donates its unsold merchandise to Goodwill, a little thrift shopping could lead to big Target savings.

For those of you who don’t want to commit to another credit card (ugh), Target offers a REDcard debit card that links directly to your bank account, and allows you to save an extra 5% every time you shop at Target. You still have to be willing to let Target collect data on your shopping habits, but there’s no interest on charges, or having to remember to pay your card off monthly. Oh, and did we mention that REDcard debit card holders receive an EXTRA 30 days to return nearly all items purchased on their REDcard at Target and target.com?

5 No Need to Go to a Target Store to Return for Free

Return purchases by mail for free with a prepaid mailing label provided by Target through your account online.

6 Return Items Like Opened Makeup (GASP!).

Most beauty products bought in stores or online can be returned, even if opened, within 90 days of your receipt. Take that, Sephora.

7 They Will Price Match Items

If you find an item in a competitor’s ad, or find the same item on another shopping platform, bring it to Target and it’ll match the advertised price. *Opens Amazon.com on laptop.

8 Shop Target Via Instagram

By searching #TargetStyle on Instagram, you can access a gallery of cute, curated shoppable IG photos, which once clicking on will take you directly to the Target website so that you can read reviews and make a purchase.

9 Bring Your Own Bags

At most Targets, for each bag that you bring in to use, you will receive $0.05.

10 Learn How to Code Clearance

According to many Target-obsessed bloggers, clearance items that end in $0.06 or $0.08 will be marked down again during the next markdown cycle, as long as there is inventory in store. The item will normally remain at the current percentage off for two weeks, before the next price cut. Price tags ending in $0.04 have been marked down for final clearance, and this is the lowest price at which Target will sell the product.

11 Discover the Cheapest (Read: Best) Deals From Home

We all know that some of the greatest finds at Target are the marked down items on their infamous aisle end caps. And now, you can shop the clearance section on target.com.

12 You Can Request a Price Rain Check

If you find an item on sale that you wish to purchase, but the store runs out of stock, you can request a rain check. The rain check entitles you to that same sale price for the next 30-45 days, which varies by state, and can be used at any Target store.

13 Subscribe and Save

Save 5% on everyday essentials delivered on your schedule when you subscribe. That means never running out of toilet paper again. #adulting.

When creating a registry, you’ll receive a 15% off coupon valid for one transaction at a Target store and a 15% promotion code valid for one target.com order. So, don’t panic when no one purchases the baby crib on your list. The 15% discount is valid toward remaining items on your registry and expires 6 months after your event date.

Case Study: Be On the Look Out for Bolo’s Bar & Grill

Social Media Marketing Case Study

Challenge:

It’s no surprise that a hometown bar and grill would have solid backing from its loyal community on social media.  Bolo’s, a client who has been with us since 2012, is that kind of place where “everybody knows your name” and then some. Knowing Bolo’s audience was easy but it was obvious that Moving Targets had to breathe new life into their stale market by redesigning their Facebook and Google strategy.

Solution:

Our first step in creating a fan-centered experience for Bolo’s Facebook page was designing a simple way for fans to engage with the overall vibe of this hometown bar. These black and white Bolo’s quotes were not only a creative favorite for our content team but these contrasting quotes also caught the eye of anyone scrolling through their news feed.

Our second step in creating an engaging and consistent presence for Bolo’s was finding a consistent place for their customers to reach them. Since Bolo’s does not have a website, it was imperative that we took advantage of all that their Google My Business page had to offer. Literally. Our team designed Google Offers based on Bolo’s regularly scheduled promos such as Bloody Marys on Sundays and Taco Tuesday specials. It was immediately obvious that fans of Bolo’s were actively searching for more info on Google. For example, within ten days of creating their Free Pool on Sunday offer, it reached 148 views and gained popularity within the Spokane Valley. These offers and events on Google were also a great way for us to cross-post with Facebook for overall brand consistency.

Results:

Embracing their laid back vibe,  we found that Bolo’s followers were engaging with their consistently cheeky quotes. We then decided to give the customers more opportunities to share why they love Bolo’s and continue coming back to their neighborhood bar. For example, using the same branding that was used for their quotes, we asked their Facebook followers to share their favorite memory that took place at Bolo’s. Within 17 hours, the post received 22 comments (and growing!) and reached 740 people.  Not only did this post allow for customers to share their experience but it also welcomed potential customers to see why it’s a bar worth trying!

In addition to an increase in content engagement, Bolo’s page-likes increased from 2,929 to 3,154 in a manner of 90 days. With this following in addition to increased brand awareness on their Google My Business page, we’re excited to see Bolo’s growth in the Spokane Valley for years to come.

Direct mail’s last laugh: Nordstrom and the danger of marketing trends

direct mail marketing trends

The cyclical nature of certain trends is intriguing.

It works like this:

  1. Something is hot for a while. The mainstream populous becomes obsessed with it and it’s a hit. It’s featured on every fun-loving syndicated news program during “slow news days” and late-night talk show hosts shoehorn it into their monologues. In short, no one can shut up about it.
  2. The fad “jumps the shark”. Once this fad becomes the thing that “everybody is doing”, it loses its luster. The masses gradually grow tired of hearing about this thing that has been hot for a while. Soon, your grandmother is even hip to this new trend and suddenly it doesn’t seem as cool as it once was. Chatter about the fad dies down and those who are “in the know”, move onto something else.
  3. The fad becomes a laughing-stock. After a momentary lapse of mention within the mainstream conversation, the old fad becomes so old, that it’s unthinkable someone would still be talking about it, or perish the thought, endorsing it. It becomes the subject of parody and is lambasted as out-of-vogue or antiquated. It’s written into sitcoms and late-night talk show hosts shoehorn it into their monologues.
  4. Rebirth. After a certain period of time and everyone has forgotten about this fad, through some strange, arbitrary set of circumstances, one free-thinker rediscovers the trend and dares to go against the grain. It’s reborn as an iconic, retro, novelty of the past that everyone remembers fondly.

There are several examples you can point to that have followed this pattern: mom jeans, cassette players, Pokémon, fondue, shag rugs and platform shoes.

It goes without saying that this obviously isn’t true of all fads. Some of them are never resurrected. There are several examples you can point to that have not followed this pattern: pet rocks, leisure suits, Tamagotchis, mullets and CDs.

It would seem, from a bystander’s perspective, that you can judge which fads really were significant during their initial time in the spotlight based on whether or not they ever see a new life, post-death.

Direct Mail is being Reborn

To say direct mail ever truly died (or even to characterize it as a trend) is a stretch, for sure. Direct mail marketing has always been utilized by business owners. However, the way it’s been talked about over the years with the emergence of new, constantly changing digital platforms has definitely duped lazy marketers into believing that that was the case.

In terms of the ongoing marketing conversation, direct mail has been experiencing a lot of limelight over the past year. It’s almost as if it never existed! Several articles like the one here that *ahem* we put out in January of this year are still being posted in May.

Direct mail for 2019

The way in which savvy marketers are utilizing the tried and true medium has changed. By integrating direct mail with their digital strategy, major brands are flocking back to the direct mail train with a seemingly insatiable vengeance.

This is most likely a result of digital fatigue on the part of consumers. Direct mail is tangible, and it’s not something we’re seeing on a near constant basis so there’s an inviting, authentic aura surrounding a well thought-out direct-mail piece with a compelling offer.

Case in point: Nordstrom loses sales as a result of terminating their direct mail program

As the incomparable Otis Redding so wisely said, you don’t miss your water until your well runs dry.

This is definitely the case for Nordstrom. And direct mail was most certainly more than just a drop in the bucket for the clothing brand.

Last week, co-president Erik Nordstrom admitted that the brand recently abandoned the use of direct mail in promoting its loyalty program. The decision was made in an attempt to get the loyalty program online and expedite the amount of time it takes to reach customers.

To Mr. Nordstrom’s chagrin, the brand experienced weaker-than-expected first quarter results due to what one can only determine was the elimination of their trusty direct mail follow-ups. Their total revenue fell 3.3% below their estimated profits for the first quarter and earned 23 cents per share, which is 20 cents less than previous projections.

Obviously, it’s anybody’s guess how the decision to eliminate direct mail from Nordstrom’s marketing strategy came to fruition. One can speculate, however, that it could be the case that someone who relies heavily on marketing trends heard they should put all their chips on digital and missed the memo that direct mail is on the up-swing (despite the fact that it was never really on the down-swing).

Therein lies the danger of taking marketing trends as anything beyond what they are at face-value – somebody’s opinion.

Trends aren’t real

The story of Nordstrom can be thought of as a cautionary tale about marketing trends. It’s important to stay informed as a marketer. This means reading about what’s hot, what’s not, what’s out, what’s in, what’s new, etc. But the most important factor to pay attention to is why and how.

The facts, figures and most importantly the numbers never lie. In contrast, people lie all the time. So, relying on anything other than empirical data to inform your marketing strategy is a fool’s game. The fact of the matter is, direct mail has always worked – people just stopped talking about it for a period of time.

Be a free and independent thinker when it comes to marketing and don’t be duped by fads. Always trust your gut, always go against the grain (if the numbers are there) and never take someone’s word for it when they say direct mail is dead.

Why (and how) you should be spying on your competitors’ marketing emails

Spy on your Competitor's Marketing Emails

Devising a sustainable email marketing strategy that continually drives sales and gets you a high ROI each quarter isn’t easy. Constant testing, amending, tweaking and freshening-up is necessary to ensure your emails continue to delight your email subscribers.

On the other hand, it’s super-easy to allow your strategy to get stale. The inconvenient truth about email marketing is that what worked last year or even last month won’t necessarily yield similar results today.

And it can be discouraging when you’re making all the right moves – regularly adding new subscribers to your database, consistently contacting your subscribers, testing subject lines, copy and CTAs and generally striving to stay on top of your email strategy – yet you can’t seem to capture the same magic you once had.

Something is rotten in the state of Emailstrategyville: population you, and it really stinks.

What can you do to make your email strategy smell like roses again?

Keep your subscribers close, but your competitors closer

Most people would say that, aside from the invocation of the word “strategy”, comparing email marketing strategy to military strategy is like comparing apples to bowling balls, and they’d be correct in making that assertion.

However, if you can suspend your disbelief for a moment and pretend that as email marketers, we’re actually super tough but also stoic, kick-ass, military generals, there’s actually some pretty legitimate wisdom that can be applied to what we do:

Keep your friends close but your enemies closer

There is some debate as to who should be credited with this quote. Some say it’s Sun Tzu, some say it’s Machiavelli, some say it’s Al Pacino’s character, Michael Corleone, in The Godfather II.

Regardless of who said it, the philosophy behind this quote is that if you can get to know who you’re up against, and understand how they think, you can easily defeat them. Similarly, if you can observe the actions your competitors are taking to sell products to an audience that is akin to the one your marketing to, you can defeat your competitors.

This militaristic approach to email marketing can actually do wonders for ensuring that your strategy remains fresh and allow you to capitalize on ideas that you’ve yet to try on your own audience.

Applying this strategy

For this analogy, your “enemies” are your competitors or any other businesses in your area (or online) that offer products and/or services that are similar to what you’re selling.

Here’s how to keep your competitors really, really close:

  1. Pick 3 or 4 competitors to “spy on”. Try to choose competitors who have a business that is similar in size to yours. The more comparable to your business they are, the better.
  2. Create 3 or 4 email addresses. If possible, use different web browsers or different IP addresses but use the same email client (like Gmail) for each.
  3. Subscribe all of the phony email addresses to each of your competitors’ email lists. We know – it’s painful. But it’s a necessary evil if you want to improve your strategy. Be sure to create separate folders for each of your competitors’ marketing emails.

What to watch for

Once you’ve done this, you can start accruing different observations based on the marketing emails you receive from your competitors and identify common trends:

  1. Testing. The reason you’ve created multiple email addresses is to track whether or not your competitors are A/B testing their emails (hopefully, at least one of your email addresses will receive an alternate version of a particular campaign). If they are – what are they testing? Have you run any similar tests in the past?
  2. Offers. Keep track of offers that your competitors seem to send out frequently. These are the offers that work best for them. They may also work for your business.
  3. Subject Lines and Body Copy. Keep a separate spreadsheet for each competitor’s subject lines and body copy. If you begin to notice any patterns, you can probably extrapolate verbiage that seems to pay-off for them in the realm of conversions.
  4. Time, day of week, and frequency. Finally, keep a detailed record of when and how often your competitors are sending marketing emails.

This is among the most low-down, dirty, sneaky and underhanded schemes I’ve ever heard of…and I love it.

You know what they say, all is fair in love and email marketing.

But seriously, if you think that major brands aren’t constantly researching their competitors and even expounding on one another’s ideas on a near constant basis, you’re not paying attention.

Another important point to emphasize is the fact that merely ripping-off ideas isn’t the endgame here – the idea is to start noticing trends that may also be concurrent within your own audience based on the actions of your competitors.

You may be able to utilize certain concepts within the context of your brand voice, but the bottom line is that simply stealing copy or design isn’t going to prove to be fruitful for you.

The idea behind this practice is not one rooted in cheating or malice – it’s rooted in becoming a competitive and worthy adversary who has a game plan and, yes, a strategy, to ensure that their email marketing efforts remain effective.

So, try this on for size if you find that you’re email marketing campaigns are getting a less-than-desirable response from your subscribers lately. You may have missed something that your competitors didn’t. And who knows – your competitors may already be watching you.
